Esrolia,Balazar and Hsunchen – Civilization vs Primitives – Pregenerated Characters

Here are a few more pregenerated starting characters for Encounter Generator . These are useful for those times when you just do not have time to go thru the character generation process. The reasons why (TPK, party member died in the middle of the game, surprise additional player…) are many. These follow the same principles than in the previous pregeneration articles (Standard Barbarians, Nomad Herders and Warriors, Barbarians, City Thieves and Priests) that were usable for example in Pavis and Sartar.

This article expands the scope beyond those standard areas to guests who might arrive.

Esrolia – Civilized

Within Esrolia there is a tiny area called God Forgot where there are traces of Brithini occupation left – godless sorcerers and their caste society.

Esrolians of course have hired help from the north – so it is alright to mix for example Sartarites into the mix. They are also avid travelers – so you might encounter a group of them outside Esrolia especially now that Belintar has disappeared.

You can create entire Esrolia group

On the other end of the spectrum you have the primitives.

Balazar is just north of Dragon Pass and really well described by the Griffin Island book and avidly documented by Jon Hunter at his highly recommended blog Back To Balazar.

Here are few pregenerated characters for Balazar

A group of them can be easily generated by using

Hsunchen – Animal Totem primitives are living at the edges of the world – thriving where others do not. They are spiritual people living close to nature and one with their animal motifs.

You can generate a group of them by using

All of the pregenerated characters are tied to Gloranthan timelines to make it easy for players to get to the world as explained in this post.

What Did I, My Parents and Grandparents And Siblings Do Before Hero Wars started

I created a way to generate pregen characters  earlier on for the Encounter Generator. I wanted to tie the pregenerated characters into the history of Glorantha. So in those I also included information about the family history for four generations – from the current time to Great Grand Parents days. Family history was connected to Gloranthan Timelines around Dragon Pass area roughly. Gloranthan timeline events come from Guide to Glorantha, Wyrms Footnotes and other sources. In that first version there was only one deed per each timeline event like in the below examples.

  • In 1563 at Elder Wilds GrandFather was caravan guard when Last Vizkinni king Partobas the Bold raises the wrath of Lunar Provincial Commander
  • In 1589 at Lunar Empire Father saw when Jar-Eel goes to Fronela expedition and overcomes the Syndic’s Ban

Here is a small table expanding those deeds that your blood relatives might have done. Deeds vary from small to large – from benign to evil – from mundane to heroic. This will be eventually incorporated to the pregen in some form . These can be used for the back story of character in character generation – this is system independent – so will work whatever version of Runequest or Mythras or even Heroquest you are running.

So for example you might pick an entry from the list and say that

  • In 1589 at Lunar Empire Father fought a famous duel when Jar-Eel goes to Fronela expedition and overcomes the Syndic’s Ban
  • In 1563 at Elder Wilds GrandFather refused to talk about the time when Last Vizkinni king Partobas the Bold raises the wrath of Lunar Provincial Commander

Now all of the above are available when generating for example a priest in Sartar.

Here an example generated…

Our History in Dragon Pass – My GreatGrandPa: In 1539 at Dragon Pass GreatGrandMother died in the action when Dragonewts Dream. Phantom dragonewts appear throughout Dragon Pass and surrounding lands carrying out mysterious rituals and other tasks.

Our History in Dragon Pass – My Grand Parents: In 1580 at Lunar Empire GrandFather lost ones’ mind seeing the carnage when Lunar Empire made trade treaty with Ralzakark

Our History in Dragon Pass – My Parents: In 1609 at Dragon Pass Mother embraced the enemy faith when Boar Hunt: Persistent raiding by tusk riders rallied their foes and many lands sent their best hunters and warriors to hunt down the raiders. Success was – as usual – questionable

Our History in Dragon Pass – My Time: In 1619 at Holy Country member of my family (me or my sibling or my cousin) was famous for depravities when Ditali raided Esrolia

On the following round need to look at some of the syntax – there seem to be some missing words here and there.

Nasty – Check. Chaotic – Check. Dorastor – Check. TPK – Check.

Looking for a one shot or TPK – here are few nasty encounters for Encounter Generator for Mythras and RQ6 from every GM’s dream and every player’s nightmare – lovely home of the shrine of Dorasta – Dorastor. Most of them mean death for even the most powerful of the player parties. Most of them are unique – meaning only one of them exists in Glorantha.

Vampires might exist anywhere. This was originally from Sun County

Disease spreading is not the prerogative of Broos only. Here is a flock of Harpies to do the same

The abandoned ruins of Dokat contain often the only inhabitant a spirit known as

Madness is prevalent in dorastor and few things are as mad as the

Mad Sultan never goes anywhere without proper entourage

There are relatively good guys in Dorastor but they are few and far between

Slimestone is a place but it has got some personality even if a bit clinging one

Siamese twins are rare but here is a pair who would like to meet you

Maidstone archers have a remote relative

This is the most volatile thing you might encounter

Some other chaotic ones are here

Link Your Gloranthan Character with Gloranthan History

One of the easiest ways to get your players tied to the Gloranthan background is to have them read one of the fabulous “What My Father Told Me” about their Gloranthan culture and one of the “What Everyone Knows About XXX” – for example this for Afadjann in Fonrit. Some of them are linked here. One could also ask the players to read Cults of Prax or even parts of Guide to Glorantha but that might be asking a lot of them.

Here is a new way of integrating character to Gloranthan history and environment. It uses the information in Gloranthan Timelines where the historical events of Glorantha are tied to generations of family.

Here is an example of the links produced.

Our History in Dragon Pass – My GreatGrandPa: In 1538 at Dragon Pass my GreatGrandFather was part of Palashee Longaxe Rebellion and overthrow of Lunars

Our History in DragonPass – GrandPa: In 1569 at Dragon Pass my GrandFather was in the camp Jarosar, king of Sartar killed by Lunar spirits

Our History in Dragon Pass – My Parents: In 1605 at Holy Country my Father was fighting as a mercenary when Building Wall Battle thwarts invasion of the Lunar Empire into the Holy Country.

Our History in Dragon Pass – My Time: In 1613 at Dragon Pass member of my family (me or my sibling or my cousin) fought for freedom in Starbrow’s Rebellion- Outraged by Lunar presence and urged by social unrest – Sartarites rebelled in force and temporarily expelled the Lunar Army. Lunars regrouped and defeated the rebels

It contains all of the historical dates published in Guide to Glorantha, Wyrms Footnotes and couple of other publications. It ties them down to what the family member of that generation was doing on that event. This very first version only have the paternal ancestors, next one will contain also maternal ancestors and more variation. Currently it only tackles Dragon Pass and the immediate surroundings but eventually will return to my current favorite area Fonrit.

Background generation generates also parent, sibling and extended family information in addition to connections and family reputation all generated according to Mythras/Rq6. In addition it also generates generic background events.

You can generate all of this by using an Encounter Generator party called

You will also find that the Pregenerated Characters for your games contain this information either for all or some generations.

Who says Dorastor has all the fun – join the Cwim’ming party

Every Tom, Dick and Harry knows that you should avoid Teshnos and Wastelands close by  it on the Wilddays as Cwim is having his daily walks.

Created the old favorite

from the Gloranthan Secrets book. He joins the Encounter Generator’s chaotic party with his small friends

who are spitting image of himself. For convenience there is now

which contains the Cwim itself, gorps he throw and the spit monsters.

It would be good to know about his arriva a bit beforehand as the party might need some preparing. So I created random party table for Foreshadowing the Encounter. It can be attached to any party and it can provide some clues that an encounter might be occurring. Some examples would be

  • locals fleeing the encounter
  • carrion animals associated with encounter gathering
  • Spoor of the encounter found
  • Footprints made by the encounter
  • Wildlife alarmed by the closeness of the encounter
  • Favorite food animal of the encounter growing alarmed

and so on.This is attached now to Cwim’ming party but will in time be attached to other parties as well.

Here are few other Chaos encounters from earlier posts

Daimons Are Forever – or return to Anaxial’s Roster – again

Here is a set of missing creatures for Mythras Encounter Generator based on Anaxial’s Roster.  These can be somewhat rare – or even extremely rare. Some of them even the stronger parties would probably not like to encounter.

The daimons and elemental spirits are inspired by both the Anaxial’s Roster and Nikk Effingham’s excellent post on elementals

There exists about 40 Luathan warriors in the Genertela continent – here is one of them, one of the less skilled ones.

Here are some trophies to gather or protect based on your parties’ instincts.

Grazer’s horses are legendary. If you manage to get one – most likely others will want it from you.

Encounter Generator Returns to Anaxial’s Annex

After a brief break here are a few additions to Encounter Generator to help Mythras and RQ6 referees create new NPC’s and other encounters.

Mostali Repairs The World Machine

The world of RQ/Mythras Encounter Generator moved to another site last year. Start of February was the last time when the links on my blog posts (more than 50 posts with possibly hundreds or small thousands of links) to the encounter generator and templates  were working. You can find most if not all RQ Encounter Generator posts on the category of the same name. Now all the links have been updated due to diligent work of the Mostali and World Machine is again repaired.

So click away – if there are still some that do not work let me know. Here are few of the pages for encounters.

Trade and Markets in Glorantha

What are the things available in the market – local produce of course, groceries, poultry, meat of local kinds. Guide to Glorantha gives background to import and export of the goods. This can give some flavor to your market. I took the data from Guide to Glorantha and used it to create local market availability of goods. The system is as follows:

  • anything the area is known to export is available locally in the market as well
  • anything the area is known to import is available from all the markets that export it
    • artifacts, silk and iron are rare in all the markets.
    • article is common if it is available from nearby region
    • article is rare if it comes from non nearby region OR has to cross ocean
    • rarity could be used as price modifier (for example 30-50-100% more price) as it is exotic and might be considered be of better quality to be worth to transport from far reaches of lozenge
    • rare goods (and even some of the common ones) might not be available and might be also subject to seasonal fluctuation (for example riding beasts, herbs and spices)

Created first markets for Umathela, Fonrit, Nochet, Dragon Pass and Pavis. Others will follow if there seems to be demand.

Here are some markets created with RQ Encounter Generator that contain above items as trade goods.

In the future more exploration about what you might see in the trading routes as some goods need to pass areas which have no demand for them.

To see the Monster Island and die – Monstropedia of Loral

Here are few new denizens of the beautiful island called Loral. It is populated by rare endangered pieces unified in their approach to life (hate the intruders). There is rather large treasure ship wrecked on the island and there used to be God Learners here long time ago so the historians are of course quite interested in the island. The below natural exhibits are imagined for RQ6 Encounter Generator. Among the less educated the island is called Monster Island.   The sources have been the Tradetalk #13, Guide to Glorantha and Men at Sea.

Some are really co-operative and are driven by the sense to please (their palates) and fulfill their heart’s desire (hate the intruders). Some of these are bad news indeed.
