Combat Style Cards for Mythras

Note: The directory based combat style cards have been replaced by Combat Style Card Encyclopaedia

Combat styles, combat style traits, weapon traits and special effects are key parts of what makes Mythras so interesting in combat. I decided to make a player aid for my campaign that contains the key information for players about combat style they have chosen.

Combat style card contains the name and combat style traits of the style with an explanation what the trait provides.

Each of the combat styles contains usually several weapons. Most of the special effects that player can choose are the same for each of the weapons. So I gathered the common special effects within the combat style’s weapons to the top of the page.

For each of the weapons the key details of the weapon are shown plus the possible weapon traits.

Underneath the basic information there are only those special effects specific to that weapon.

So how would player use this:

Let’s say she knows the combat style Gladiator – see in the Close Combat Encyclopaedia – section Styles for Standard – Gladiator. Easy to navigate there by opening the pdf link above and searching for Gladiator and clicking on the page number.

She has succeeded in the attack so she now has options

  • choose any of the items in the common block underneath the combat style – any from Close Range to Trip Opponent.
  • decide to use her Shortsword’s Impale or Bleed
  • use her Buckler’s Bash or Stun Location special effect.

When it is her turn to defend she can

  • use her Daredevil trait to evade blows without ending up prone or
  • she can passively block with her Buckler 2 locations or
  • she could actively parry with either her buckler or
  • she could actively parry with her shortsword.

Here is a bigger combat style example

The files here contain close to 100 combat styles described as above. The material is scourged from AIG, Monster Island, Mythras, Monster Island and my own campaign.

Spirits in a Material World (Djinn special)

Was reading the Other Sinbad and Dead Djinn in Cairo for inspiration to a sea voyage that my players might be undertaking in the seas surrounding Fonrit . This reminded me that I had not yet created the mighty (and not so mighty) Djinn in the Mythras Encounter Generator.

Pete Nash did a wonderful article on Fenix papers to bring the Djinn to life in Bartimaeus style and that gave me the stats.

The Djinns use a new sorcery order “Smokeless, Scorching Fire” for example “Adept of Smokeless, Scorching Fire”.  I made three levels (Apprentice, Adept and Mage). Djinns also needed new abilities in the Enemy Ability Feature set.

Here they are approximated in Mythras Encounter Generator.

Sailing to Fonrit to find stash of Gloranthan silver and gold coins…

There are now a few new generators available at tools.notesfrompavis.com. It also allows you to select up to 5 generated items at the time.

Port Today

Updated version that takes into account the improved Ship generator. Provides daily leavers, arrivers and stayers for a typical Fonritan Port for various seasons of the year. It uses an invented Fonritan distribution of the kind of ships. Seasonal activity has also been updated.

Ship from Fonrit area.

Ship generator creates a ship from Fonritan area. It provides name, kind, captain abilities and the abilities of the crew as ships and shield wall units. It also includes the reputation of the ship, its current seaworthiness, where it is sailing to and its cargo.

Here is an example:

Formidable Dragonewt, Enormous Maslo Penteconter catamaran

Earlier updates on the tooling are here and for the Bad night at the port in Fonrit

It was a very bad night in the port at Fonrit…

..the trouble is you hardly remember any of it.

“What if one of the characters is waking up with  a headache. He is with dead fully clothed body of Asta daughter of Toril, a Westerner female or Wahhab ibn Shakir, a Vadeli male. Victim has small bite marks in the neck. Waker has flesh wounds in arms.

He is at roof level garden in merchant’s quarters. Door is locked from inside.

Last thing he remembers is going into a ceremony of a brotherhood: ‘The High Road – Negotiate with Natives, establish the trade and send priests to teach Civilized Behaviour’. There is threatening voice on the door . It is cleaner?”

Johnn Fourr created had a wonderful idea for creating plot seeds in his article at “Roleplaying Tips” I created couple of generators for a Fonritan Port Town in the spirit of those.

First one is the “City Bad Night Encounter Seed Generator” in the style of Dashiell Hammett, the movie Hangover and many pulp detective stories but in the fantasy world.

The second one is Town Rumor Generator – again for a Fonritan port town. The latter one is built on top of Town Rumor Generator that is available for Campaign Logger Generator users. Johnn and Jochen from the Campaign Logger team kindly have given permission to use it as a basis.

“A descendent of the Shah of Kalabar, The City of Sorcery has been hiding in town as Olende son of Bodolf, a Westerner conspirator for many years.”

There is also a generator for what happens in the “Port Today”. It is for a Fonritan port and takes into account the weather for Glorantha seasons from Guide to Glorantha, cargo from trade in the same book, maritime nations from the Men at Sea and ship data that has already been published on this site and is based on all the Gloranthan publications I could find. Ship condition and ship rules have been updated to conform with “Ships and Shieldwalls” rules and the ship reputation and naming is coming from “Raging Swan Press” publications with their permission.

There are also few person generators creating person cameos for Orlanthi from Umathela and Fonritan people. Each will give a short description , portrayal and hook adjusted from 3 Line NPC generator from Campaign logger folks and taking into account the professions that might come with those civilizations. Profession names and their attachment to civilisation type (barbarian, civilised, nomad) come mostly from Mythras Core Rules.  The skin color and clothing come inspired from the Guide to Glorantha and greetings come from the various Gloranthan sources for example from “Gloranthan Voices”.

Here is one Orlanthi male

“Aricin son of Utgard

Greeting: I am from the city of Barugaza in Umathela.

Description: I am a sassy habberdasher. I sniff incessantly as if having a running nose.
Portrayal: People’s problems in civilized society seem trivial to me. And I think the game of kings and powers is not for the faint hearted – and you are not faint hearted. No one else is going to have to endure the hardships I’ve been through.
Hook: Right now, I want to be with my family but I am just as judgmental and prejudiced as everyone else – perhaps more so.

My skin is acned. My beard is horseshoe moustache

Skin color: Olive skin. Bald. Eyes: Grey I am conscious of my horseshoe moustache beard
Clothes: Kilt made of wool. It is colored subdued cold green. Long wool tunic dyed subdued smoky ecru. Tunic is decorated with intricate stitching. Over this a quilted wool jerkin and a wool cloak dyed subdued cold crimson
High conical hat with ram’s horns sewn in .
Additional Details: a small peridot jewelry – fibulae
Armrings on left arm
Disorder and Illusion Runes tattoo on Left Hand,Mastery, Movement and Air Runes tattoo on Face”

There are pregenerated characters for many of these in Pregenerated Characters for Fonrit if you need some for a quick run. Searching in the Encounter Generator for Fonrit you will find many NPC’s and other encounters for your game – take a look at both the parties and enemies tab.

Pregenerated Characters for Fonrit for Mythras

Sometimes you just need a bit more variety on the kind of characters that people take up.

Here is larger variety of pregenerated starting characters for Encounter Generator .

These are useful for those times when you just do not have time to go thru the character generation process. The reasons why (TPK, party member died in the middle of the game, surprise additional player…) are many. These follow the same principles than in the previous pregeneration articles (Standard Barbarians, Nomad Herders and Warriors, Barbarians, City Thieves and Priests, Esrolia, Balazar, Hsunchern – Civilization vs Primitives and Larger Variety of Pregenerated Characters for Esrolia and Sartar) that were usable for example in Pavis and Sartar.

This article expands still more the scope beyond those standard areas to guests who might arrive.

Fonrit is one of the more intriguing areas in Glorantha. Background for creating characters in Fonrit can be found here. Here is a set of pregenerated characters for a game in a land where deceit is the new normal, trust was sacrificed centuries ago, colors are bright, conspiracy and assassinations are on the menu every day, Renewed battle for the (relative) freedom for slaves and Oldsters try to uphold the oppression and Vadeli are your friends while Silence is not.

You can generate a group of them by generating

To see the Monster Island and die – Monstropedia of Loral

Here are few new denizens of the beautiful island called Loral. It is populated by rare endangered pieces unified in their approach to life (hate the intruders). There is rather large treasure ship wrecked on the island and there used to be God Learners here long time ago so the historians are of course quite interested in the island. The below natural exhibits are imagined for RQ6 Encounter Generator. Among the less educated the island is called Monster Island.   The sources have been the Tradetalk #13, Guide to Glorantha and Men at Sea.

Some are really co-operative and are driven by the sense to please (their palates) and fulfill their heart’s desire (hate the intruders). Some of these are bad news indeed.

There are other pages on Monster Island

The Sea, The Sea – Gloranthan Ships for RQ6

Glorantha has inspired a largish variety of ships and maritime vessels over time. Most of the sources are out of print, out of date or incomplete. Some of them are not even canon anymore. I decided to gather all of the ships and maritime vessels that have been published and update them to the latest of the ship rules – the gem of a rulebook called Ships & Shieldwalls for RQ6.

Here are the ships The list contains also the physical size information about the ships that has been gathered from all the source material or extrapolated from other ships.

Umathela – Orlanthi, Sedalpists, Vadeli in the Southern Continent of Pamaltela

RQ Encounter turns to South. Lord of the Storm is strong in the coast of Pamaltela (Fonrit, Fonrit update, Vadeli) even before the arrival of Harrek. The problems with Lunar seem remote when the real problems are forest elves, Afadjanni surges and Vadeli treachery and there is even talk of  new power of Kresh in the south. Sorcery is strong in this land. Thanks for Simon Bray for the very useful background discussions that will hopefully generate even more of Umathelan and Fonritan material in the future. Here are few encounters for Umathela in RQ Encounter Generator format.

Horses are rare in Pamaltela so Horse mounted mercenaries belong to wealthy employers or elite troops.  Some remote tribes have tamed large flightless birds (known as horse claws) as mounts.

Sedalpist Sorcery Order with Apprentice, Adept, Mage and Archmage has been created.

One of the cities has its own marine corps and it has been detailed here

Various inhabitants of Umathela have been created here.

The merchant caravan and Umathelan market has Common and Rare trade goods in Umathela according to the guide. Rare is rare if it is coming relatively far or is otherwise very precious…
Vadeli magic has been updated. A new sorcery order: Vadeli Sorcery order has been created.
Many of the encounters possible in Fonrit are also likely in Umathela even though they might be more hostile situations – so the relevant encounters have been updated with the tag “Umathela”
All of the sorcerers have been updated with Special Magic Component to Shape and Unknown Magic Component. The convention is that all the sorcery orders usually teach the default Magic Components by which sorcerers can shape their spells (Combine, Duration, Magnitude, Targets, Range). The order might sometimes not teach one of the default components (or might teach it only to higher ranks of sorcerers) and might teach one of the special magic components (Ablation, Focus, Fortune, Precision, Swiftness).
When creating a sorcerer you can choose one or more of these as a random feature or as non random feature. This will give even more variety to sorcerers. All of the sorcerers I have created have now this possibility of one of the default magic components missing and one special one added.

Exigers of Pamaltela in Mythras – on the trail of Jeff Okamoto Campaign Log

I have long been fascinated by Jeff Okamoto’s campaign log of the epic Sandy Petersen campaign ranging from Pavis to Pamaltela. Years and years ago the original manuscript was on sale at Convulsion (somewhere in the 90’s) and even while fiercely trying with a friend of mine (hi Nigel) we could not get enough money together in the auction to purchase it. Luckily few years ago the manuscript became publicly available.

One of the highlights of the log was the exiger campaign. Now with some new information unearthed by Guide to Glorantha and the wonderful community at Google+ Glorantha forum I put together the exigers for Runequest 6 Encounter Generator.

Exigers are a group of fierce mountain clans in Mari Mountains in Pamaltela ruling over their Menial slaves who farm and live in the valleys while exigers trade with outsiders.

First exigers depicted here are Humakt worshippers. Very few of them actually ride horses – usually there are not enough horses to equip the men at arms. Some  tribes have ‘tamed’ mountain trolls – they gray giants in the Okamoto log.

All exiger at initiate level and higher are usually the original exigers each commanding half a dozen men at arms who usually have been flocking together to the fortresses of the exigers. Sometimes the exigers have a sorcerer with them.

Guide to Glorantha has a picture of an exiger at page 588.

Menials are slaves of the exigers who have been forbidden to use arms. They have been using staves and unarmed combat to defend themselves. Menials know of friendly shamans in the mountains – of whom the exigers are wary of.

Added also Doraddi Hair color and Appearance – Doraddi Skin to the additional feature tables and Exiger Tribes to party additional feature tables.
