Sword and Sorcery Encounters with Encounter Generator part 1

Sword and sorcery campaign needs bravos, barbarian berserkers, palace guards, corsairs, enforcers, thugs, and pit fighters as NPCs among others. Here is a set of sword and sorcery encounters that could work for sword and sorcery campaign.

They are designed from the RAW culture skillsets like pregenerated characters (see here) but they have their main combat style in the proficient range (60s) instead of novice.

Their combat styles are based on ranger dan material that is also included in my combat style encyclopedia and shown in the combat style cards. Each NPC gets one or sometimes two combat styles from the list, couple of main weapons, sidearm, shield and ranged weapon if defined there and a name. For most of them folk magic is also described but if your campaign does not use folk magic, you can just drop it. You can find them with tag “Swordandsorcery”.

So as individuals or even groups they are ready to use. Here are the links to MeG pages. For most of them – the basic link, link to a combat style card and a link to a strong one, a leader and group of them as a crew if applicable

More material about Encounter Generator can be found here and combat style cards here. The encyclopedia of Combat Styles can be found here. As usual the the useful charts for Mythras can be found here. If you are just beginning with Mythras go to starter resources.

Combat Style Cards for Mythras

Note: The directory based combat style cards have been replaced by Combat Style Card Encyclopaedia

Combat styles, combat style traits, weapon traits and special effects are key parts of what makes Mythras so interesting in combat. I decided to make a player aid for my campaign that contains the key information for players about combat style they have chosen.

Combat style card contains the name and combat style traits of the style with an explanation what the trait provides.

Each of the combat styles contains usually several weapons. Most of the special effects that player can choose are the same for each of the weapons. So I gathered the common special effects within the combat style’s weapons to the top of the page.

For each of the weapons the key details of the weapon are shown plus the possible weapon traits.

Underneath the basic information there are only those special effects specific to that weapon.

So how would player use this:

Let’s say she knows the combat style Gladiator – see in the Close Combat Encyclopaedia – section Styles for Standard – Gladiator. Easy to navigate there by opening the pdf link above and searching for Gladiator and clicking on the page number.

She has succeeded in the attack so she now has options

  • choose any of the items in the common block underneath the combat style – any from Close Range to Trip Opponent.
  • decide to use her Shortsword’s Impale or Bleed
  • use her Buckler’s Bash or Stun Location special effect.

When it is her turn to defend she can

  • use her Daredevil trait to evade blows without ending up prone or
  • she can passively block with her Buckler 2 locations or
  • she could actively parry with either her buckler or
  • she could actively parry with her shortsword.

Here is a bigger combat style example

The files here contain close to 100 combat styles described as above. The material is scourged from AIG, Monster Island, Mythras, Monster Island and my own campaign.

Encyclopedia of Mythras Combat Style Traits

The directory based combat style cards have been replaced by Combat Style Card Encyclopaedia

Here is a list of many combat style traits that I have adopted or will adopt into my campaign. Currently the list is above 60 traits.

It contains the combat style traits from the following official publications:

  • Mythras Core,  Mythic Rome, AiG, Mythic Constantinople, Monster Island.

In addition to these official ones it contains few from RangerDan’s campaign and Raleel’s Martial Arts Combat style traits.

The unarmed set alone is quite an expansion to the ones in Mythras Core. The way I am planning to bring the unarmed ones on is to create schools that have some of these available – like the ones that come from Mythic Constantinople. Raleel’s set already has several that quite nicely will form a school as they depend on each other.

You will be able to vary your combat styles quite nicely by choosing a small set of “cultural” or brotherhood weapons (1-3) and adding one, maybe two combat style traits on it.

The list is available here

..and it is of course also updated in the Mythras Charts and Tables page
